Your rating is worked on based on whether you win or lose and then also by comparing your current rating with your opponents. Obviously if you win your rating goes up and if you lose it goes down, but the amount that it goes up or down is dictated by the difference in rating of you and your opponents.
If you win, but your rating is higher than the majority of players that you are against then your rating will go up by a smaller amount. This is because the system is saying that because you have a higher rating, that you should be winning the game. Therefore winning the game fore-fills the systems prediction and thus you get little reward.
