Relationships and Dating in the Bible Does the Bible say anything about dating? No, but it does describe relationships. If “dating” is defined as two single friends of the opposite sex doing things together for fun without any attraction or romantic desire or intimacy involved at all, there is no issue to discuss regarding dating. They are spending time as friends. The Bible describes and gives directions concerning friendship. But for most, the issue of dating involves “romantic attraction and desire. Also, in our culture, through “dating” people will often find a life partner and marry. How men and women view a “date” and “dating” can have a profound effect on their future. The Bible does not talk about “dating,” but it does talk about relationships.

Fahmida Azim for NPR When year-old Nermeen Ileiwat first began college, she could not wait to get into a relationship — maybe even get engaged before graduation. But after one year, the rising sophomore realized she had no idea what she wanted out of life and was in no position to get into a relationship. That decision didn’t last long. Only a few months after, Ileiwat met someone at a party, and their friendship quickly turned into something more.
However, dating was not that simple for the now year-olds who are Muslim.
When I am telling someone or leveraging my relationship with someone in regards to dating or not dating, I am always doing that within the covenant of me being their pastor and them being a covenant member of the church.
And not for lack of trying. That’s not uncommon among millennials, but as a Black gay man, I’ve begun to wonder how my race has affected my chances of finding love. But when I discussed my issue with friends, other queer men of color, they all said I have a type: I tried to deny it, but when I thought about my dating history, I realized that my friends were right. Why am I not drawn to other men of color? And the more I think about it, the more complicated the answer seems.
I grew up closeted in a very religious community. The only gay people I saw in the media were white, and the few Black queer celebrities that I knew of, like Wanda Sykes and Michael Sam, were in interracial relationships. My childhood in the Black church led me to believe that Black people were inherently homophobic — a myth — and that the only Black men who were gay were on the down low or infected with HIV — also a myth. They were estranged from our family, partly because of their health and their sexual orientation.
I never had the chance to speak to either one while they were alive, but I often wonder what advice or mentorship they could have provided me as a young Black gay male coming of age in such a sheltered environment. Many queer folks were closeted, and of the few who were out, most of them were white.
What Does the Bible Say About Interracial Dating and Marriage?
As I mentioned, there are exceptions — there is a group of guys who prefer older women, and there is a group of women who is uniquely attractive despite being older. But denying that a significant age difference is an issue is like denying that a typical woman wants to be with a guy who is taller. Many younger men appreciate the wisdom, intelligence, reponsibility and maturity an older woman brings to the relationship. Most younger men in this study, preferred to date years older than their own age.
You underestimate how many younger men are tired of the games women their age play.
To the outside observer, it seems clear that these vastly different views about the potential for romance in opposite-sex friendships could cause serious complications—and people within opposite.
We misinterpret the attentions of the opposite sex. As an outgrowth of the frustration and desperation sometimes experienced when we want to be married, many singles overreact to any attention from someone of the opposite sex, especially if that someone is attractive to them. If a man looks at us twice, we women can read all kinds of things into it. If a woman happens to sit by a man at a social function, he thinks shes sending him come-ons.
This misinterpretation of attentions is one of the major reasons its difficult for a single man and woman to have a platonic relationship. Both are on their guard, worried about signals, instead of allowing that two people can actually have a friendly conversation and enjoy each others company without a romantic attraction. I also observe too often that many singles yes, Christian singles enjoy sending signals and then disowning them.
